The Great Spiritual Migration

Time: 10:00 am – 10:40 am

Room 130s

Drawing from his work as global activist, pastor, and public theologian, Brian McLaren challenges readers to embrace the powerful new understandings that are reshaping the church. In The Great Spiritual Migration, he explores three profound shifts that define the change:

  1. Spiritually, growing numbers of Christians are moving away from defining themselves by lists of beliefs and toward a way of life defined by love
  2. Theologically, believers are increasingly rejecting the image of God as a violent Supreme Being and embracing the image of God as the renewing Spirit at work in our world for the common good
  3. Missionally, the faithful are identifying less with organized religion and more with organizing religion—spiritual activists dedicated to healing the planet, building peace, overcoming poverty and injustice, and collaborating with other faiths to ensure a better future for all of us
With his trademark brilliance and compassion, McLaren invites readers to seize the moment and set out on the most significant spiritual pilgrimage of our time: to help Christianity become more Christian.

A Perfect Storm: Understanding and Responding to Mental Health Challenges in Young People

Time: 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Christ the Savior Lutheran Church

The number of teens and young adults with mental health issues is on the rise. More and more young people are experiencing anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thinking. Has life gotten harder or do young people simply find it more difficult today to develop the resilience and grit needed to navigate tough times?

This presentation will summarize national data about mental health in young people and describe factors that are contributing to this “perfect storm.” The presenters will describe symptoms of various emotional disorders to help parents, teachers, and peers recognize when it’s time to seek help. They will also present practical strategies we can all use to encourage young people to seek help while strengthening their emotional well-being. Time for questions and answers will be provided, along with a list of resources.

PRESENTERS
Julie T. Steck, Ph.D., HSPP
Dr. Julie Steck is a psychologist with CRG/Children’s Resource Group, a multi-specialty behavioral health practice. Dr. Steck specializes in the evaluation of children and adolescents with developmental, learning, emotional, and behavioral concerns. In addition to evaluation, Dr. Steck focuses on treatment of children and adolescents through individual therapy with the child/adolescent and through working with family and school personnel to assist them in adapting to the child’s needs. Areas of expertise include autism spectrum disorders, mood disorders, ADHD and learning disorders. Dr. Steck has worked with children for 45 years as a teacher, school psychologist and psychologist.

David R. Parker, Ph.D.

Stephen Ministers are Christian men and women trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life but share a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need. What often surprises them is the tremendous personal and spiritual growth they themselves experience.

You will receive 50 hours of training from October to April. Materials cost approximately $50 per person and are due after your application has been processed and approved.

Stephen Minister Training

Time: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Tuesdays, beginning October 2

The application deadline has passed for the 2018-2019 intensive Stephen Ministry training. For more information about becoming a Stephen Minister, please contact Sue.

If you are a compassionate person and a good listener, prayerfully consider becoming a Stephen Minister.
