Take What You Need, Give What You Can

God Leads, We Follow
Have you noticed the yellow shed on Christ the Savior’s property? Have you heard of FeedingTeam.org? Their motto is “Take What You Need, Give What You Can” and their mission is to provide food for our hungry neighbors with an emphasis on serving families that do not fit the models of public assistance and traditional food pantries.
Our Men’s Ministry has been focusing on their relationships with God and challenging one another to make a significant change or two in their lives. That change happened for one of our members, Bob Fasick, when he found out about the Feeding Team organization.
As I reflected on ministries I had served over the years, all were dictated and directed through my relationship with God. From youth ministry to men’s ministry to Hamilton County Great Banquet to Truth@Work to the prayer team to mission trips, God’s hand was always present.
But Karl Freburg (men’s group leader) really made me think. “God what’s next for me? Where can I help serve to bring honor and glory to you?”
God’s timing is always perfect, and I soon found my answer!
A good friend and business mentor and I scheduled lunch to catch up. It had been some time since Mark Hall and I got together to break bread, so I was excited to see how things were going with him. We spent time catching up on business and family. I am a Cubbies fan, Mark a Cards fan and at the time, I thought we still had a fighting chance!
Mark then updated me on his corporate ministry, FeedingTeam. Mark and his wife Lisa (a Cubbies fan!) began this ministry several years ago to help Hamilton County families by setting up “self-serve” pantries across the county. Nothing fancy. Yellow “sheds” stocked full of non-perishable food products to help families in need.
As I learned, despite the affluency in Hamilton County, many families were still struggling to make ends meet. The pandemic did not help matters.
While Mark spoke, I said a silent prayer. “God, is this where you want me? Is this how I can help serve our neighbors?” And I got chills…
The following Saturday’s Men’s Group was amazing as my brothers shared what God had put on their hearts. I shared FeedingTeam and how I was confident God was calling me to serve in this capacity. Our group was very excited about the ministry as well and we discussed sponsoring a pantry at Christ the Savior.
A lunch with Pastor Todd and a meeting with Pastor Brian (he got chills also!) and we were well on our way to helping feed our neighbors in the Fishers area.
With the help of Eagle Scout Wyatt Addleman and his dad Steve, who built our pantry, we are the proud sponsor of one of those yellow sheds.
This pantry is not just a Men’s Ministry initiative. Our entire church family can get involved by simply dropping off non-perishables in the pantry when God tugs on your sleeve.
“Take What You Need. Give What You Can.”
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be involved in a food pantry ministry! However, I am not in control, God is. He has bigger plans than just this FeedingTeam pantry. My prayer is that this resource will help us in reaching neighbors to know, love and serve Christ.
Thank you God!
